What sets Belmont apart is Belmont Abbey College, a four-year private Catholic liberal-arts college founded in 1876 by Benedictine monks, whose campus includes the Abbey Basilica — a German Gothic Revival church that was the largest Catholic church in North Carolina at the time it was built. Mount Holly: A Thread-Making Legacy

Mount Holly was incorporated March 11, 1879, and takes its name from the Mount Holly Cotton Mill, established in 1875, which prompted the community's renaming that same year. Its 2020 population was 17,703 — slightly larger than Belmont's. Mount Holly is home to American & Efird, Inc., the world's second-largest thread maker, which employs more than 980 people locally. Where Belmont's identity centers on an academic institution, Mount Holly's centers on continuous industrial manufacturing — a mill-town legacy that never fully left, just modernized.
