Mayes, before engineer Stuart Warren Cramer took over development starting in 1910 and reshaped it into a model planned community; the town was renamed Cramerton in 1921 and formally incorporated in 1967. Cramer's own "Cramer System of Air Conditioning" is credited by some accounts with the origin of the term "air conditioning" itself. Today Cramerton is home to a 2020 Census population of 5,296. The South Fork Catawba River, which runs through town, saw real, documented flooding during Hurricane Helene in September 2024 -- part of a countywide event that closed ten roads across Gaston County.
